District 202 came into the finals of the Southwest Prairie Conference tournament with nine singles representatives among the ten positions.
However, only two were able to win their final match.
They were Plainfield North’s Alyssa Ruddy at No. 8 and Plainfield South’s Nicole Tangen at No. 10.
Ruddy, a sophomore, withstood a three-set match with Romeoville’s Delana Hughes (22-20, 19-21, 22-20) to be crowned champion.
“I’m happy,” Ruddy said. “I was a little scared, but now I’m good. I didn’t know what to expect, but it was kind of a surprise. This gives me a lot of confidence (for the future). I’m excited.”
Ruddy took advantage of Hughes’ fatigue, as she had played a pair of three-set matches earlier in the day.
