It might not have been the best played game there will be there year, but there won’t be many more exciting.
Plainfield East overcame a five-point deficit to win at Metea Valley 27-26 on a touchdown with five seconds to go.
Despite committing 17 penalties for 180 yards and facing a 4th and 12 from the 34 with 14.5 seconds left, East quarterback Brad Goffinet found Dustin Demumbrum open underneath and Demumbrum did the rest, racing to the endzone and hitting the pylon for the winning score.
“I don’t even remember what the down was, to be honest with you,” Goffinet said. “I knew we had to get the first down. I was pressured and had to go out. I threw the ball and didn’t even know we scored until I saw Demumbrum stand up and I started to cry because I was so emotional and was caught up in everything. It was probably the best moment in my life.”
“I saw the safety playing back and I took the sideline and came up with the touchdown,” Demumbrum said. “Then they came up on me and I took advantage and took it to the sideline and dove in the end zone and made a play. We came up big.”
It was the second time in the fourth quarter the two connected for an unbelievable touchdown.
